The unlikely pairing of a hospital radio DJ and a clairvoyant make the bill at Tiverton’s Comedy Hall on March 4 one of the more surreal events of 2013.
But in the hands of the brilliant comedian Tom Binns, both Ivan Brackenbury and Ian D Montfort will provide a belly full of laughs as he spoofs up the two backward and flawed characters.
Brackenbury is Binns’ elder of the two characters, and his Radio 4 series was dedicated to the mishaps and mayhem of the inappropriate DJ. In faux Alan Freeman style, Brackenbury dedicates tunes to the sick in Disease Hour at the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire hospital with inane enthusiasm. He has played with real radio jingles, has dedications from real celebrities and cracking one-liners: “If you’re feeling at death’s door, I’ll pull you through”.
And Ian D Montfort is equally as inappropriate, providing stage readings in a Geordie Derek Acorah style. Montfort can only connect with dead people the audience don’t know as well as celebrities and historical figures who have passed over. His mocking parody of the stage psychic can be spookily accurate as well as hilariously mocking. Indeed, he has had instruction from a professional psychic and the cheek and ridicule can often blend seamlessly with the sublime and genius. He currently has a half-hour show airing on Radio 2 through February.
It is no wonder Binns has a plethora of awards and comedy nominations, as well as a CV that includes presenting TV shows RI:SE, appearances on Spooks and Alan Partridge and writing credit on Trigger Happy TV.
