For those who like their comedy with a caustic anti-establishment twist, there’s a treat in store in August at the Comedy Hall in Tiverton. Steve Hughes, sublime comic and ex-heavy metal drummer, returns from sell-out shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and New Zealand Comedy festivals to preview his second UK tour.
The master comedian will be testing out new material for his latest show ‘While It’s Still Legal’ featuring his usual outspoken social commentary before embarking on the main tour. Previews are a rare chance to watch while master performers work on their material, testing it out before taking it to larger, often impersonal and cavernous arena-style venues.
At the Comedy Hall in Tiverton, it’s up close and personal. Past previews here have included Wales’ favourite ‘jack of all trades’ Rhod Gilbert fresh from his ‘Work Experience’ TV series, and West Country wonders Russell Howard and Bill Bailey. And all for the discounted price of a tenner.
Steve Hughes may look like a roadie, but he returns to the UK on a wave of acclaim following his debut tour here in 2012, which sold out so fast that promoters scrambled to add extra dates. And he’s built on his reputation as a unique, world class performer with brilliant sets on ‘Live at the Apollo’ and ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ (BBC One), as well as ‘Stand Up For The Week‘ (CH4) and ‘One Night Stand’ (Dave).
Hughes’ shows are ‘social commentary at its best’ (The Times). His laid-back erudite charm and consummate comedic timing seem to package even his intelligent rage attractively – and he will have you laughing at what would otherwise be sobering thoughts. He’s an edgy ‘truth-teller’, excavating the sores of the human condition that you’d rather not think about.
“Do some jokes first, make you like me, then we’ll discuss genocide. It’s an old trick” he laughs.
Well it works…
