Magic and comedy have gone together hand in glove since music hall days. And the latest phenomenon who combines stand-up with sleight of hand is Piff The Magic Dragon.
Tiverton’s Comedy Hall will bring Piff to the West Country on February 4th. It’s another coup for the small, monthly comedy club, which has already played host to the likes of Bill Bailey, Rhod Gilbert and Russell Howard.
“We love to bring the next big thing to Tiverton,” says Comedy Hall promoter Steve Lodge. “Piff has had more than 7 million hits and rising on YouTube for a card trick he performed on Penn and Teller, and he is sure to become a household name.
“If ever there was an act destined for TV stardom, it’s one that comes dressed as a dragon.”
Piff’s rapid rise in the comedy world has included a free fringe record for his debut show in Edinburgh, a sell-out tour of Australia, supporting Mumford and Sons’ national tour, appearing at New York’s Secreat Policeman’s Ball and adding an unprecedented 9 shows to his sell-out Edinburgh show “Last of the Magic Dragons”. He completed a national tour last year and has already been the Magic Circle’s close-up magician of the year.
But there’s more top comedy on the bill with opening act Gareth Richards. Gareth combines comedy with music, and is best known for co-hosting the Sony Gold Award winning Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio Show. The Evening Standard describes him as a “clever craftsman with a big future”, and he picked up one of the 10 best jokes of last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, awarded by the Dave TV channel.
Compere for the night is Bristol’s Mark Olver, a regular at Comedy Hall and highly experienced stand up. As well as supporting national tours for Lee Mack and Russell Howard.
The show will be held at a new venue for Comedy Hall, at the Tiverton Community Arts Theatre. Tickets are available for £10 from www.comedyhall.lan, or at outlets including Mr Ben’s Emporium in Cullompton, and Tiverton’s Jolly Vintner and Twyford Photography.
